Web design and development skills

I focus on the design and development of small to medium-sized promotional websites and blogs. For most of these sites I also develop content with an eye for SEO  (Search Engine Optimization). I’m proficient in CSS and HTML and can use PHP and Javascript to create the sort of sites you see in my portfolio. At the moment I’m a fan of both the Genesis and Thesis theme frameworks for WordPress because both are a breeze to customise and give full control over SEO.

Graphic design and digital print signage

As a web design all-rounder I create the graphic designs for the websites I develop.  When clients also began asking for other marketing materials it made sense to extend my services to cover print-based graphic design and digital print signage.  For around 15 years I have worked closely with graphic designers and printers to produce all kind of print materials. These have included business cards, brochures, manuals and signs. It’s a great feeling producing designs that you can see out and about in the environment rather than just viewing them as part of a website.

Experience and qualifications

I have over 10 years experience developing websites, e-learning solutions and technical communications. This builds on 20 years experience designing learning programs and doing face-to-face teaching. I hold a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design, Graduate Diploma in Teaching and a Bachelor of Arts degree.

I’ve been lucky to have worked in a very diverse range of industries and content areas that have included health, public safety, process manufacturing, OHS, risk management, procurement, IT implementation and public sector administration. I like to think this really helps me know ‘what’s what’ in the world of work.

My career began as a secondary teacher in 1989. I taught in schools in Australia, England and the Bahamas before moving into instructional design work around 1994. In 2010 I decided to make a break from the vocational education field. The details of my past life as a teacher and instructional designer can be reviewed in my resume.

Location

I work from my home office in the town of Boonah just over an hour’s drive south west of Brisbane. Its pretty nice out here and I really enjoy working locally.  Even so I’m also happy to work on fun projects wherever in the world they might be.
